Dear Departed Don

Written by Jill

It is with a very very heavy heart I write to inform you that founder member Don White passed away late last night in the Hospice aged 96. Don was very hardworking and gave so much of himself in the early days helping to build the green and clubhouse and then became a regular mower for many years. He was fiercely competing in league games right into his late 80s. More latterly he enjoyed the Sunday competitions socialising with friends he’d made over the years even when he had moved into a nursing home. He would take great delight in telling the residents that he’d won a cup when he returned! A true stalwart of the club and gentlemen who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

On a personal note, when I joined Mottram, it was Don who took the time to teach me his mark which I try to get on whenever I can. I’m sure I’ll have a tear in my eye playing that for the first time next year.

Our hearts go out to fellow members – his sister Beryl, brother Stuart and niece Sharon as well as his wider family.
